An Prediction Market Participant Profited $Nearly Half a Million from Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A trader earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Changing Odds in Forecasts
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
A particular user, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market Signals Before Public Statement
Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
However these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in market sentiment immediately prior to the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.
