Are You Able to Solve This? That Forgotten Dutch Creation Which Forged our Modern World
One can find many candidates to claim the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
As per a new book, however, that honor belongs to the automated sawmill invented through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, building a simple trading ship necessitated around ten sawyers laboring over 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical amount of processed timber might be produced in less than a week.”
Owing to this rapid mechanical cutter, that turned logs into planks using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders could construct vessels faster compared to anyone else, which unleashed one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic as well as artistic dominance across Europe and the world.
The Original Genuine Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends Dávila, was “humanity’s initial authentic industrial apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. A single part converted the circular movement into vertical action to power the saw. Another component transformed the rotary movement into a lateral motion advancing the log to the blade. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead one precise increment per cycle.
“Every component seemed simple on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to combine them so the machine acted in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every descending motion while advancing on every return motion. It was an astonishingly clever application of fundamental components.”
A fact that brings us up to today’s challenge. I’d like for you to reinvent one of the fundamental concepts underpinning this historic invention.
