A head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who proposed the United Kingdom might have reached maximum pizza demand while diversifying the franchise into poultry items has been replaced after disagreements with its board.
Leadership Transition
The former CEO is departing after a brief tenure in charge, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a permanent CEO.
The outgoing executive, who was with the company for more than two decades, had sought to redirect Britain's leading pizza delivery company towards fried chicken, commenting earlier this month there was not “significant expansion” left in the UK's pizza market. He observed chicken was the quickest rising food category in the international market.
Board Friction
Reports indicate that there was disagreement between Rennie and the board over his focus and management style, although the company's announcement said he was departing “through mutual consent”.
Recent Product Launch
In the autumn, the chain launched its chicken-focused offering – which the former chief called a “significant new phase” for the organization – and is trialling it in select stores in the North West region and Northern Ireland.
While the firm is still intending to launch it across its almost 1,400 stores in the coming year as intended, it considers chicken products as complementary to its core pizza business.
Board Statement
Ian Bull, the company chairman, commented: “We are confident that there are a number of opportunities to drive further growth and performance improvement in Domino's core business. We are concentrating on identifying the suitable leader to oversee the disciplined execution of that development approach.”
Market Difficulties
In the latest update, Domino's, which has 13 million customers in the British Isles, said orders dipped by one and a half percent in the latest quarter. In the summer, it cautioned that the takeaway market had “become tougher” as it blamed economic uncertainty in the lead-up to the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15% drop in interim earnings.
Competitors are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut announced the shutting of multiple locations a last month, after the business behind its British operations fell into administration.
Health Efforts
Adapting to market shifts towards balanced diets, Domino's has launched light options, such as its Thin & Crispy range of bakes below 400 kcals as well as vegan and allergy-friendly options. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 calories. A big margherita has over 2,100, while a individual has under 1,000 calories.
Acting Leadership
The interim chief has been with Domino's since 2021, and had a background at the betting firm William Hill. It is understood that she is not seeking to take on the CEO position permanently.
She said: “Our team has a number of ongoing expansion and operational projects that we will be concentrating on executing at speed.”
She added these involved ongoing development on the company's logistics network and menu innovation, and its rewards program.
Domino's is also lacking a full-time CFO until the spring, when Andy Andrea comes aboard from the drinks company a well-known firm. In the meantime, Richard Snow is temporary CFO.
