The Princess of Wales's Traditional Yuletide Musical Celebration Honours Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary festive musical service at the iconic London venue, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Compassion and Love

The theme of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a tumour, and who established a foundation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the concert.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, established in part by the former royal to increase availability of music lessons.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Pembrokeshire, has been supported by the trust, with awards contributing to musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at tonight's service.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now a student at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to hone their artistic talents.

A Sisterly Duo

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a young hero award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to generate funds for local food charities.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

The musical lineup includes singer Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
